HAVING RAISED POULTRY FOR 60 PLUS YEARS

TRY AND HELP FOLKS WHO WANT ANSWERS AND HONEST HELP,
WITH THEIR POULTRY PROBLEMS.

MY HUSBAND AND I RASED PURE BRED SHOW POULTRY FOR DECADES.

HE RAISED, MODERN GAME BANTAMS, AND VARIOUS LARGE FOWL BREEDS,

BANTAM CALL DUCKS OF GRAHAM OAKFRD STOCK.

HE ALSO RAISED ROSECOMB BANTAMS AND POUTER PIGEONS.

I RAISED WHITE COCHIN BANTAMS AND WHITE COCHIN FRIZZLES

ALSO CORNISH GAME BANTAMS.

ALSO I DID A LOT OF BUTCHERING OF CHICKENS AND RABBITS
,
AND SOLD THE MEAT, BACK IN 60'S AND 70'S.

AS 1980 IOWA PASSED A LAW YOU HAD TO BE SET UP FOR THAT BUSINESS.

SO I QUIT AND SOLD OFF MY EXCESS AND JUST KEPT RABITS FOR OUR OWN USE,

AS I BUTCERED THE ADULT BANTAMS NOT QUALIFYING TO OUR ABA OR APA STANDARDS,

THAT WE SHOWED QUALIFYING SPECIMENS AT THE POULTRY SHOWS.

I EDITED AND PUBLISHED NATIONAL POULTY NEWS FOR 29-1/2 YRS,

AND ENJOYED HEPING PEOPLE WITH ARTICLES PERTAINNG TO THEIR CARE OF POLTRY..

AND THEN HAD TO "PUT TO BED" NPN IN 12-2005,

AS MY HEALTH MADE IT SO I COULD NOT LIFT THE HEAVY,

BAGS OF MAGAZINES TO THE POST OFFICE.

I WAS ON BYC FROM 2009-2010 AND DUE TO HEALTH PROBLEMS HAD TO QUIT.

I CAME BACK ON BYC 12-2016

AND I AM ENJOYING EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

Good to have you back Glenda Heywood. It was nice reading about you and your history. It is great that your health has improved so well for you to be able to come back onto BYC. We seem to have lost so many of the oldtimers who actually have a lot of chicken experience. We lost Robert Blosl a couple of years back, and he had a lot of knowlege. Welcome back!.

It's a human drug, so that's why it's 500 mg. I'm not sure what a five pound chicken would get, but I'm gonna guess it's about 50 mg. Cutting a pill will not work. Pill has to be crushed and added to suspension, or crushed, weighed, and dosed mixed in a little water. Either way, the bird must be weighed and some math needs to be done.

WELL it would seem that at 50 mg
this 500 mg is 10 times the amount
so when crushing the pill divide it into 10 parts and that is the amt to give a chicken.
put the unused amount back in bottle till next time

I am trying to make up for lost time.

I now have got a pace maker and the doctor gives me at least 13 yr more!!!

Oh, I know exactly where to get all these medications, but this is not the thread to discuss that, nor is it the right thread to debate using non FDA approved medications.

Three drugs have been talked about in this thread, Clavamox, Baytril, and Cipro. Clavamox treats many gram positive and gram negative bacteria, I think, and Baytril and Cipro tend to treat mostly gram negative bacteria. I don't write well enough to explain that, so I suggest that everyone google gram negative vs gram positive bacteria.

The only way to do this accurately is to buy a gram scale, crush the the pill into a fine powder, weigh all the powder. Make note of how much all powder weighs, remove all powder from scale, divide powder weight by 10, make note of what that is, then weigh that amount on scale. Does that make sense?

Quote: Clavamox is not banned for use in poultry, so it *can* be used in chickens, though one needs to not the the eggs for some time after treatment (don't ask me what how long, 'cause I don't know). Baytril and Cipro are both banned for use in all poultry, period, but many vets still prescribe them.
