What all should I look for in a true Buff Orp. I have been told that a lot of the chickens sold as Buff Orps. are actually backyard cross breads. Please help. I would like to add a Buff Orp hen so I can hatch some chicks from a natural brooder.

Look up the Standard of Perfection for Buff Orpingtons. They should be large-bodied with buff feathering with very little to no smut in the tail feathers. If they have a dark tail, they shouldn't be bred, but will be fine as backyard layers. Hens should be around 8-10 pounds, roosters a few pounds heavier for nice quality birds. Also, they should lay a nice sized, light to medium brown egg. No white eggs.

Also, make sure they have white legs and single combs with 5 points and a blade ideally. If they have yellow legs that are Buff Rocks. They have have a rose comb, it is a Buff Wyandotte.
