1) What type of bird , age and weight.
Bantam Ameraucana. 7 months old. about 1 1/2 lbs

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
She is hunched up, feathers ruffled, lazy and lethargic. moves slowly like she is really tired. seems to just want to sit in the house. but she's not broody. she feels lighter than usual. strange thing was she was hyper and active and normal yesterday. free ranging with her sister, boyfriend, and a silver laced wyandotte pullet. she has been laying for about 2 weeks. droopy tail and when i took her out of the coop she just sort of let me, acting sleepy and limp. when i put her down she slowly walked forward two steps, then hunched up and sat in the same spot and wouldn't move.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
only since this morning.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
no they are all fine

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
nothing!

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
i have no idea. she was sleeping in the coop last night with the other birds, but i forgot to close the coop door. there is no sign of trauma though. it's really strange!

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
layer pellets and water, free ranging in my unplanted garden so grubs and worms, possibly other bugs. maybe some violets or yarrow.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
normal.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
nothing! i don't know what to do?

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
i can treat her myself, as long as it doesnt involve needles!

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
none

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
straw, dirt, sticks. (i have checked her crop though, and it is not sour or swollen. she right now has a perfectly normal crop)

I recommend that you visually inspect her for lice/mites, especially around the vent area. Since she laid an egg yesterday, I wouldnt suspect that she's eggbound, but it's possible. If she doesnt have lice/mites, try placing her in a container of warm water...enough to cover her underside. While she's in the water, gently massage her underside for about 15-20 minutes. The warm water will expand her innards and massaging will help move the egg along. You can put olive oil in and around her vent in order to make it easier for her to lay the egg. Good luck.

I agree mites/lice could be the problem. Perhaps with the door to coop open last night the combination of keeping warm during the below freezing weather and bugs has left her weak.

Won't hurt to offer some electrolytes and a little cooked blood drained off bottom of some sort of meat you may be having for dinner tonight.

Make sure she is warm - really warm like 70-80 if you can until she pops out of this. A bath might be an excellent way to do this.

Okay. I put her in my 85 degree greenhouse, and syringed her 7 cc's of water with electrolytes and vitamins in it. she seemed a bit perkier after i fed her the water so i went to the feed store to get some ivermectin in case she somehow has some kind of worms.... but it didn't look like she did. no evidence of it whatsoever.

then, when i got back from the store she was dead!

one of my only two lavender Ameraucana pullets.

i have NO idea what happened!

i know she wasn't eggbound. she laid yesterday, and i could feel the new egg slowly forming inside her abdomen.

wasn't cocci -- no blood in stools.

she didnt have mites. and as far as i could tell she didnt have worms.

i am having a bad month financially my hours were cut for this month (didn't work at all last week, except friday!) so i don't think i can afford a necropsy. i'm so mad.

first pox, then this mysterious lethargy and sudden death.

i feel like i need to know, because i am worried the other chickens might get it. any input would be greatly appreciated.

Wow that was quick. Might have been something you couldn't help - like heart or liver problems.

Sorry she's gone.
