Well finished the coop this weekend and went to get some chicks. I purchased them at Anvil Acres in Pinellas Park, Fl. Mary Ellen was very helpful and the place is wonderful. I got 5 six week old chicks, mainly because I wanted them to go directly in the coop. My son and I left with 2 Easter Eggers , a New Hampshire , a Silver Laced Wyandotte and a Gold Laced Wyandotte . My wife, who was against having chicks at first actually volunteered to pick up feed and now thinks they are so cute. She has named the New Hampshire "Annie". I can already tell Annie will be the sweet heart of the bunch. My son named on of the Easter Eggers "Randy",although he knows they are girls. In fact my son, who is 9, is absolutely obsessed.
I am using pine shavings in the coop, as recommended by Mary Ellen. I know the chicken wire isn't totally predator proof but our yard is home of and patrolled by "Jasmine", our Bull Mastiff.
I also plan on putting in some windows for more ventilation. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
