The other things that work for fire ants if you don't want to use stinky poisons are rice cereal (like for babies), cream of wheat or corn meal. Apparently, the ants feed the tiny pieces to the queen and they absorb moisture inside her and the 'swelling' kills her. Same for the other ants when they eat it too. You have to sprinkle it on and around the mound when everything is dry or it doesn't work. It only takes a couple of days...
