Fire and sugar ants

Welcome to BYC.
Sometimes fire ants work their way into one of the pens. I sprinkle Sevin dust or Permethrin dust on them and mix it in the sand. Bye bye fire ants. I use sand in my pens. Fire ants are the only concern I have. I've seen sugar ants and other red ants running around, I dont mess with them.

I use this. You must follow the label instructions as product must dry an hour before allowing animals on treated area. I like using this on empty runs waiting on new birds.

You can also use this but this is not cat friendly. Follow the label instructions.

Ditto what Dawg53 has noted. If you can locate the fire ant mounds it is worth using a bait to spot treat mounds. I put bait on mounds found in my barnyard, once my girls are in for the night.(Never broadcast--some ants are actually ok, plus chickens might find the bait)

What's real fun with fire ant mounds is to take your shovel and stir up a mound. Then go to a different fire ant mound with the shovel and scoop up a mound. Then go dump it on the first mound you stirred up. Stand back and watch what happens. Heheheh.
