Fire Ant ?

Thanks so much! I'm going to try the orange oil mix first. I'll have to tell my friends about this. OHHH I Hate fire ants! They can kill small animals and my grandson stepped in a bed and had to go to the ER and get a shot and meds it was so bad! Poor little guy is only 15 months old. Thanks again everyone.

I wanted to ask about ants also. I just got done building my coop and the ant thought it was for them. They are not fire ants I dont think. I have gone out 3 times now and put boiling water on the pile, and it kills all of the ones on the surface, but then they just pop up somwhere else. They are all over the place running around. I see the mention of this orange oil stuff, but is there something I can sprinkle around the entire coop, and outisde of it too to keep them away?

mom'sfolly :

I use orange oil and molassas in water. It seems to work well and it smells great.

I don't know what the molassas does, but the orange oil is a natural insect repellant. I found the recipe online, but I just usually dump it in the bucket and pour it on the mound. HATE those nasty fire ants!!!!!!

I wonder if the Molasses is an attractorant(sp) hmmm, need to figure this one out??

Has anyone's chicken been injured by fire ant bites? I caught my girls starting a dust bath in a fire ant nest this afternoon. They look fine... but I keep thinking about if one ant gets under those feathers.... OUCH!

Should I be worried? They were only there for a few seconds before I got them out. None are complaining (and I caught one chowing down on them, too!)...

My cure for fire ants consist of 2 ingredients:

(1) 5 gallons of gasoline

(2) 1 lit match

Please don't do this. Not all the gasoline will be burnt off. The residual gas will enter the water table, contaminating not only your well water, but that of your neighbours. Even if you are not on a well, this is OLD SCHOOL thinking, & one that destroys our environment. My dad used to use gas back in the day to get rid of weeds growing in between the patio stones.

Since we now know the long term cancer causing effects of the chemicals involved, this is just so WRONG on so many levels. I have my BA in Chemical Engineering, so please consider Eco--System friendly alternatives.
