So about two weeks ago, we went out in the afternoon to find that something had attacked one of our chickens. Through the fence. During the day. Found fox scat, figured it must be a sick fox, burried our poor girl, and treated the wounds that one of our ducks and one of our chickens got in the scuffle, and were super relieved when two days later, found a mangy fox on the property, and dispatched of it, thinking that we'd solved our predator problem and now our girls and boys were safe. How wrong I was. This morning, I went out to say good morning, and clean and fill their water. And when I got to the fence, I discovered feathers, everywhere, and when I looked inside, two of our girls were missing, and there in the front corner was the body of my sweeter ducky, Duckbro. Upon further inspection, I found my poor little Belle, in the corner, barely moving with basically her whole head covered in blood, and both eyes sealed shut. Thankfully my girls are quite sweet to one another, and were actually cuddling and grooming sweet Belle all day, while we worked on completing their coop (they've been staying out in the run at night, because there just wasn't room in the temp coop for everyone anymore, and we figured with a bird netting cover, and 8 ft fences, they'd be safe, needless to say, there was no way we were finishing today without completing their coop) So once the shock had worn off my little girl, I cleaned her eyes gently with cool water, and would you believe it, both eyes are "okay." Not sure if she can see or not, but I'll have a better idea tomorrow! That said, would a weasel, climb an 8 ft fence, and squeeze under the netting, and do that all again with a chicken in tow? or should we be worried about some other sort of predator?
