Well I am having my first Duck emergency. One of my 12 week old Wh Ducks Has a hard lump about the size of my pinkie on the bottom of her foot. I have isolated her during the day in a 6x6 kennel and dog crate at night. She hop around and it is hot to the touch and swam a bit yesterday. She is eating and drinking, and quacks along with everybody else when I come home.
I was thinking I should give her some anti-biotics. I picked up the powder kind from tractor supply. I think it is duramiacin(sp) How much do I give? I was hoping that I would not have to open her foot up. I have not done anything like that before. Any advice would be helpful Thank-you.

Right away you can start with swims in warm (80 degree) water, followed by Epsom salts compresses and follow that with triple antibiotic ointment on the foot, top and bottom. Es is a laxative, that is why I use compresses, not just adding it to bath water.

You may decide to open the foot later, or not, but at least this will begin to put medicine where the infection started, and possibly draw some of the nasty out.

I don't have experience dosing oral antibiotics, but I know there have been some good threads on the topic. I will see if I can find a few.

My preference is not to open the foot if at all possible, because of the risks involved. I agree if the lump is the size of a pinky, it has probably been there a while and the risk of systemic infection is higher than it would be very early on.

Here is what Captain Cluck used after a raccoon attack.
===========

When my duck, Lucy, was attacked by a raccoon, I had head wounds to deal with, too. No jaw damage but she had a bite taken from the edge of her bill.

I put her on homeopathic for bites and vitamins at first, but homeopathics take a long time to work, so after a week on that (and an infection starting in the leg wound that I had missed) I switched her to Duramycin (got at Tractor Supply). Add 1/4 teaspoon to 20 oz of water (2 1/2 CUPS). Only mix up what you will use immediately and store the rest of the powder in a clean, dry jar. You will want to keep a measuring spoon in the jar just for the Duramycin. If you won't be using the entire 20 oz right away, put the extra in the refrigerator until you need it, but do not keep it for longer than 1 day. I have seen funk grow in it if kept longer than that. Lucy got her water in a 20 oz travel mug 2x a day.

Thank-you Amiga for the reply. That seams right to dose with the meds in the water than take away. Ducks drink so much water, not sure if they should have the meds infrount of them all day. I figure the water is pretty warm. It is 102 deg here right now. do you wrap the foot awfter you put the ointment or leave it open?

Foot wrapping is not my strong suit, so I use the ointment, slather it on really well especially at night, and it seems to be on the foot long enough to make a difference. I have tried wrapping, but often the wrap is off within minutes.

It is really nice to have a second person to hold the duck or apply the compress, but I have done it solo.
