First Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon- Join us! Set Day: Easter

So is tonight (day 10) our first "legitimate" day to candle the turkey eggs?

Deb

The one day that I just went to bed, exhausted, without candling.

I am nailing down the particulars for the next contest but we need more entries for the yoga contest!!!! I will have to see if I can get one submitted. Just been so dang busy.
I haven't done a full candle yet on my eggs. I will probably do that tomorrow morning if we don't have to work. If we get to fly today, we don't have to work tomorrow.
Speaking of work, off I go!

I think the pullets are the less agressive eaters and that if I separated them from the cockerels, would be a bit bigger quicker. Alot of people just give them an extra week or two (which they can handle since they grow a bit slower) after they butcher the cockerels. I take mine to a processor and don't want to make two trips, so they are smaller than they could be. I'm thinking of getting the sexed Cornish X this fall so they are all closer to the same size.

I was wondering about the smaller breast size on the non-commercial breeds. Is there more meat in other areas? We like dark meat so bigger legs and thighs is good with us! I saw that someone said they make ground turkey out of most of theirs.......I wonder if this is why.......we have been conditioned to picture the "butterball breast" and it's hard to break that but change can happen!!!

the ground turkey would be me... the reason why is that we use a LOT of ground turkey here.. and since we butcher 20+ turkeys a year it only makes sense to grind our own burger... the bones are boiled down into turkey broth.. which is fantastic for everything from soup to rice.. so none of the bird gets thrown out except the normal stuff (heck.. i've even made quill pens from some of the nicer feathers...)

for ours birds we do find that they have nice legs and thighs.. the breasts aren't bad.. certainly not the size of a broad breasted though... so if your family is a fan of white meat it's probably better to go with a bird with a larger breast if they are gonna fight over it
I think the main reason why i prefer the heritage birds over the broad breasted is that i am not forced to butcher them before they keel over and die on their own.. I can wait 6 or 7 months.. or 2 years and they are still kicking!
the other major plus is that the meat tastes SOOOOO much better than a grocery store bird

I need to take some more pics.. to show the variety if nothing else..
all the eggs hatched out.. well.. except for the may 5th babies.. only 7 of those though... so we will still have a bunch running around (plus the 17 I ordered from Porters.. whenever they hatch and are shipped to me)

now I have to resist the urge to set more turkey eggs... ahhhhhh!

Ok, I have to confess that this is my first time hatching turkeys, and I'm researching late (I know, get the ruler).

I am finding conflicting information on resources regarding temp. Some say the same range as chickens, some say a full 5 degrees higher. I fall upon your mercy, sage turkey hatching BYCers!

I am too exhausted for going anything right now except to bed.

Hoop house is on its way. Just gotta cover it all in chicken wire (yes, I know it's not predator proof) and then a tarp and get the chickens in it.

That is awesome! I need to build a couple of those!

Legitimacy aside I did candle and pulled the 4 questionable ones as there was no change. In true SCG fashion I also candled the chicken eggs (day 4) and all 13 out of 17 look good! I'll wait a bit before I pull the 4 iffy ones. I also went through the broodies and candled them. I swear when these girls get up they take some of their eggs with them. The ones I place are marked with the due date and they are all mixed up!
Here is my "Poultry Yoga" entry:

Beautiful!

I know what you mean by resist.

I have a bator that is empty and it is killing me but I also still have about 60 turk eggs and 20 more silkies yet to hatch.

I have tomorrow off, so hopefully will get some good yoga pictures. It never fails though, all the interesting things happen when I don't have the camera. As soon as I leave it in the house though, the coolest opportunities pop up!
