First Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon- Join us! Set Day: Easter

I just checked on my 4 turkeys for the umteenth time. Nada. The air cell are too small in the shipped eggs. Just right in my 2 eggs. The turkey tutors are waiting for them . . . AND SO AM I !! I set about 6pm Sunday . . . the wait continues. Maybe it's time for some coffee.

I intervened.........after reading here about the fan and seeing no progress before I went to bed, I took each egg that was pipped and cracked the shell at the pip and peeled it away. The membrane was dry.
Okay, I'm home and thought I'd do some chick stuff before the novacaine wears off. I had an abcess on my gum and it turned out it was two broken roots from a molar. The molar, along with it's gold crown is now sitting in a plastic bag on the table. The space it vacated was the recepient of a bone graft and several sutures.

OW ow ow ow ow! I'm experiencing sympathy pain.

I'm better today, an ice pack, a few vicodin and soft food. Thanks! Now I have to consider if I want a $1,000 dental implant as recommended. It's a back molar on the bottom, it can't be seen..............hmmmm. I am 58 years old, do I really need that tooth?

Currently, I'm at 14 tutors and one pipped turkey. I've helped so many chicks in the last couple of days (and opened eggs to find fully formed dead chicks) that it's hard to keep my hands off the turkey eggs. I keep telling myself, "they are due TODAY, leave them alone!"

Update - 15 tutors out (a couple still drying/resting), one more that just has a beak out, which may seal it's fate. I've never seen such a crossed beak. It looks like a pair of bypass pruners. If it doesn't straighten out when the chick finishes hatching, it will stand very little chance of survival.

Anyway, with more messing with than I should have been doing (opening the incubator countless times and actually moving the egg from one incubator to the other), I have all three turkey eggs pipped and actively working on escaping.

I had to move the turkeys by themselves and all the rowdy chicks that still need incubator time to beat each other up by themselves. They can all join back up in the brooder later today.

Please everyone just finish up with no more "events". Besides, I have serama eggs due in 17 short days

I am determined to have a successful hatch with the little stinkers.

I hope I am not heading for a disappointing hatch. I have five turkeys hatched and one zipping right now. The other seven turkey eggs are just sitting there as are all of the tutor eggs. I am hoping that things are just running a bit behind on the chicken eggs and the rest of the turkey eggs.
Deb sorry about the chick with the crossed beak. I had one on the first hatch I did. It hatched perfectly normal and then over the next few weeks it started crossing and getting worse. I tried everything I could to try and get it to stop at a point where the chick could at least eat. Nothing worked and I had to cull it. That was the hardest thing I have ever had to do.

Unfortunately, this one had to be culled at hatch. Through the hole in the shell, I could only see the crossed beak. It was a silkie, at hatch the beak was severe, a problem with one eye and part of the brain was on the outside of the skull case. These are my first silkies, but I'm assuming this is a potential danger with breeding for the vaulted skulls. It can give you a winner in the show cage, but has the potential of chicks with skeletal issues. I'm sure it was a combo of that and some kind of incubation issue on my part. This chick probably should not have hatched. It did not pip at all, when I put a pip hole in the shell it started chirping like mad and I helped it out. I would have almost rather have not known.

Okay, more out of focus chick pictures, but I had to show ear tufts on a day old araucana

I'll have to go for better shots, but I didn't want to torture this little BBR too much.

Obviously, the tuft on it's right is better, but they are both there!

Ok well I was directed here!

My Grandfather gave me six turkey eggs that he found in his hayfield after they mowed it. The mother was no where to be seen so he called me and brought them over. I candled them and there is a dark mass filling up about half the eggs. They didnt seem to be moving but it may be because they were cool. They have been in the incubator since Thursday night around 8:30.

How long should I wait to see if they are still alive/ still progressing?

Also I have chick due to hatch on the 20th. I am pretty sure the turkey eggs were around day 10. By the air cell.

Quote: Sorry about the cross beaks, never easy to deal with culls. I talked to a master breeder lst summer about cross beak, and he talked to another master breeder , and cross beak is regarded as a lethal gene, so culling is reasonable. Just so hard to do though.

Deb, you are a gifted photographer!!

came home from taking BFs niece to The Avengers and my second turkey is walking now. The third one though is likely to be a cull or a death. It has one eye that is just cloudy, no pupil, no iris. It's blind in that eye, I'm sure. Hope it wasn't my candling.
