So I've had quail for about 6 years, got my Easter Eggers last spring, and got 2 bantams this summer. So I've had quail eggs and green eggs, but today one of my bantams laid her first egg! I knew that she was getting closer because her comb came in and she had started squatting, but I wasn't sure if she would lay now or wait until spring when there was more daylight. I have a little two story rabbit hutch inside the bigger 10x10 coop and the door open and partially blocked, just for the bantams to be able to get into without the big birds having access. I am very proud that she put her egg inside the hutch there, because I have a feeling the big girls might have poked it around if she'd put it in their house/nest box.
I got her and her sister in late July at one month old. Ellie is the one that just laid the egg and is doing well, and Lex her sister started off identical then stopped developing at about 3 months as a dwarf. I doubt she'll ever lay eggs, and honestly kind of hope that she doesn't so that I don't have to worry about more issues. I mostly got them because they are super cute and friendly, wanting me to pick them up and pet them, but also so that I can use them as broody hens for my quail eggs if they decide to go broody later on. They're all spoiled rotten brats so if they do nothing but be cute and eat treats, I'm totally ok with that too.
