Hi Everyone!

I am a newbie and wondering if anyone can help me figure out what might have happened.

I ordered chicks from McMurray and they were part of a large group order. I think they were shipped on Tuesday and we got them on Wednesday. I am Ontario so it’s still cold this time of year.

They all seemed ok when we got them home (one was shivering briefly when I first picked them up. I have them in a large tote, brinsea eco glow heat plate, medicated chick starter and I gave them sugar in their water. There are pine shavings but they are fully covered in multiple layers of paper towels.

I noticed last night that she seemed more lethargic then the others and would fall asleep when I held her. The others all had very full crops too but hers seemed more squishy if that makes sense? I made up some water with stress aid and dipped her beak in it to get her to drink. I did that today too but she was getting progressively more lethargic. She was having small creamy like poops. No blood. Also I think she still have a small portion of the yolk sac attached under her vent? It was less than a pea size and wasn’t pasty butt as her vent was clear.

Any ideas? She ended up passing this morning.

Anything I should be doing to help the remaining chicks who all seems to be doing fine? I’ve got them all on the stressaid for now.

Thanks everyone!

I think by what you described their was nothing more you could have done she/he was just a weak chick sometimes these things happen due to no fault of your own. Nutra-Drence in the water might have helped, but if all your other chicks are doing well and the yolk sac was not fully absorbed in this chick I would have to say it's just one of those things. I am sorry you lost your chick:hugs

Thank you all for your responses! I think I knew logically that I had likely done what I could but it was harder than I expected! I will look up Nutra-Drence. Some of those things seem hard to find in Canada. The "StressAid" I used was electrolytes/minerals. I'm going to keep giving it to the remaining girls for another day or so. So far they all seem to be thriving though which is a relief!

Thanks again
