i have 4 RR about 4 weeks old in a 35gal. plastic tub with brooder light and would like to move outside. I live in eastern Washington and temps are 60' days and 40's nights. The chicks have been in tub on my dinningroom table since they were bought at the store. I have turned their light off during the day for two days and back on at night. My question is when i move them out to their new coop how can i keep them warm in the coop because it is too small for the brooder light?

Chicks usually go out to the coop once they are fully feathered. If you wait that long, they should be able to handle the cooler temps at night.

Alright if you can't keep an eye on them all night them maybe you should
bring them in at night, as when I do that there is more them ten chicks to
keep each other warm .......

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Chicks can go out once fully feathered at 6 weeks of age. Are you saying that your coop is too small to put a light in one corner? Is it smaller than your brooder?

most lamps have a clamp where you can clip it some way and angle it, it may not be able to hang straight up and down but even an angle would help.

Welcome to BYC. I put my red stars out in the coop when they were fully feathered (just under 6 weeks). But I live in Texas where I suspect the night air may be a bit warmer. They will huddle together in the coop just as they have in your tub / brooder.

HTH and again welcome!

Welcome to BYC!

I get mine out at 5 weeks old. If the nights are still a bit chilly, I take the heat lamp out with them and only use it at night. I don't keep it right on them, but just enough to take the chill off at night. They do just fine. Just make sure the lamp is permanently attached so it can't fall in the night and start a fire.

Enjoy your new babies! If you have any other questions, that is what we are here for. Welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good suggestions above. X3, sometimes it is easiest to just bring them in at night for a week or two rather than putting up a light, they don't do much in the dark (usually just keep them in a dog crate).

Hi!
No it is bigger but not by much and i have the brooder light hanging in the house and no where to hang outside because of outside cats. The brooder is 14"x24" and the coop is 29"x22" and that would put the light too close if i clamped it. I think i will get out the dog kennel for now. Thank's for the help
