First off I'm a 23 year old with no experience what so ever with building anything. :/
More importantly I'm doing this all by myself with no help because I want to see how I do.
Starting this thread just to document my coop build for my own amusement.
Coco is also lending a hand
Wanted to do this as cheap as possible so im only purchasing screws and 2x3 + 2x1 for the frameing.
I have never done anything like this before so i first looked around on this site for some ideas a drew out some sketches. Originally I was going to make it out of old pallets I had until I figured out how impossible the bloody things were to pull apart!
Sooooo a lot of split wood later and after my dad told me about all the wood he had in the shed and wasn't using i changed my plan to suit what I had.
1st Step: PLAN- Decide on a design change my mind a million times, finally pick something I really like, realise I dont have the materials for this back to the drawing board. Settle on a nice simple 3x4 house shaped coop.
2nd Step: START- Be brave and start today I first sorted through the wood to get lengths that were at least 3 foot for my floor then laid them out on the floor as seen in the pic above with my dog walking all over it. Then I cut out two 4 foot long pieces of the 3x2 and laid it out then measured in between them and cut out two shorter pieces to make the frame for the floor.
This is what I have so far nothing is screwed together yet because the drill decided it didn't feel like working. The wood is just laid on top of the framing 2x3 in the photo :/ so Im waiting for my dad to come back from his fishing trip so that I can borrow his other better one that actually functions.
3rd Step: FLOOR- Finally have a working drill. Screwed together the frame for the floor. Made a few mistakes and got VERY frustrated with doing this until I realised that pre-drilling a hole before I screwed the 2x3 together helps a lot. I then screwed the floor boards onto the frame and ended up with this: floor finished yay!
4th Step: FRONT AND BACK- I am making the walls 3foot high and then there will be the extra space of the slopping roof on top. I placed down more boards and cut out the framing for the front and back of the coop.
I'm leaving a gap at the bottom of the side, front and back panels for the wood to cover the floor framing making it look nice and makes it easier for me to attach the front/back/side panels to the floor.
The weather is bad here in Ireland so I need to be able to make each panel first and assemble the coop outside in one day. So far so good
5th Step: FRONT AND BACK ASSEMBLY- I screwed together the framing for the front and back. Nothing is level (didn't even really check no leveler thingy available) and yes there are plenty of small gaps but it seems to have turned out pretty decent. At least it held together lol. Decided to put a window on the front also.
I then screwed the wood onto the framing of the front panel will do the back tomorro.
Covered the framing for the back panel left a large access door for cleaning.
