First coop/run cleanout

Google sand in coop it’s a game changer!!!!
My entire coop is 6 inches of dry sand. No flies no smell. I have a nice warm perch and no draft but controlled ventilation. I scoop each day. Amazing so happy with it and so are my 4 ladies.

As a general rule, sand works well for people in dry climates -- if they don't mind daily scooping -- and horribly for people in wet climates. :)

The article I linked above includes a pros and cons list.

Thanks I’m new to chickens this will be my first winter I don’t mind daily scooping gives my time to interact with them. They have been use to a lot of contact over the summer I just retired and my granddaughter lives with us her and her friends are in love with them and so gentle. Our chickens love to be held and to sit on our laps. I will read the article! Thanks for sending it.

Another point against sand (anywhere) - if you have cold winters, poopy sand will freeze solid into one big block and will be impossible to clean. It can cement itself to whatever surface the poop fell on. Soon the area under the roost will be a solid mess of poop concrete. Freezing poop is a problem with any bedding, but things like pine shavings at least have some fluff to them and can be broken up, and the fluff dries faster, preventing solid blocks of poop concrete in the first place.

That never occurred to me 😳 thanks from letting me know. It’s going to be a very interesting winter. It’s my first winter with chickens. I’d have them running around the living room lol but my husband might have something to say about it lol. I think the winter weather will be harder on me than my girls lol.
they have a whole yard to free range…. But sit at the back door waiting for me most of the time lol
