One of my 15 week old ISA browns layed her first egg today in the corner of the coop.. I wasnt expecting this for at least another month or two!.. It was soft and another chicken ran over it and broke it.. :( we havent even put nests in there yet ( as of today we did) But I am still so surprised does this happen often with the age and the soft small egg? ( first flock) I picked it up and took it our cleaned up the area ... she kept going back to look.. I was excited for the first lay and dissappointed all at once..

Sex links can start early, generally around 16 weeks so you aren't too far off. Sounds like it was a shell-less egg, which happens when the egg comes out before the shell is applied. I'm sure all the new feelings and sensations is stressful for some. Many new layers will lay odd eggs, or drop them in weird spots. They all eventually get the hang of it and the system gets all the glitches worked out, give her time, and congratulations.

I had a 4 month old silkie lay a tiny, but fully formed egg! She tends to lay her eggs on the food tray or/and blanket cave, but she is using the nestbox now. Funnily enough, she herself never laid any soft eggs so far, but her two sisters who started on time laid soft eggs.

She is the only one out of 10 chicks, 8 hens in total to lay early.

Your hen is just starting her egg journey. Soft egg means 2 things, A beginner, and low calcium intake. Try offering some oyster shells free choice as source of additional calcium. If you choose to switch to layer feed, now would be the time. Most beginner chickens do start with hard eggs though. I choose to use non-layer feed for my hens, because not all are laying. I use 2% calcium Alflock and supplement with oyster shells free-choice. Layer feed is 4% calcium.
WISHING YOU BEST.... :thumbsup

Last week I had 12week old olive egger start laying and this week 13 week old easter egger start laying. Both of them are laying small eggs but they arent full grown yet.Im just amazed that they started laying so young.you can see in pic how much smaller eggs are compared to my old chicken's eggs.
