Well we were excited and disappointed. We got our FIRST EGG this morning and it was laid in the nest box!!!! But it was without a shell and it was a big mess... Are we doing something wrong? Our chickens are just 17 wks today and we are new to chickendom... any advice?

First time layers usually lay there first egg like this. I wouldn't worry. Unless you get more like that.

Put some oyster shell in there if you don't already have some available. Nothing to worry about, it happens with new layers. You will have your homemade breakfast soon.

    Congrats!!! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

My first one was a super soft shell, and they layed it from the roost! I know your feelings! LOL It's been 3 weeks now and they are laying in the nest! Yeah!!!! It's so funny that they all use the same 3 nest boxes. I gave them 16 boxes for 23 hens. But they want to use the same one. LOL The ladies are coming along GREAT! Only about 6 laying now but the rest are coming in, a new layer every few days.

I love my Chickens! " Their Deliscious!" [IMG] .....and super sweet!

    God Bless!

Oh thank goodness...I thought maybe all my researching and reading on BYC and the internet was for not... [IMG]

I have been putting oyster shell out but alas I have been not putting it out everyday lately since we hadn't seen any eggs yet. I will be diligent now with it.

Will it be long before we see more eggs if this one was like this? I'm figuring it was probably my leghorns since I read they lay earlier than others.

    Thankx! [IMG]

I've had soft-shell eggs too here and there, but I'm thinking it's just each hen getting started one at a time. Because I'm also getting some nice hard shells too. I've got oyster shell out for them.
I'm sure you'll start getting some good eggs soon, but it sure is a pain to deal with those soft shells in the meantime, and hard to be patient![IMG]
