First egg but.........

We got our first egg laid today. I went into the chicken coop and found it broken and no where near the laying boxes. Can anyone tell me if this is something that happens. I have had a fake egg in the boxes to show the girls where to lay them. Not sure what happened!

I have had a couple chickens that just drop it where they are on their first egg and then attack it, crazy birds. Was it broken and contents intact or had the egg been eaten also? I am not sure if the first lay outside the nest box is "normal" yet I do have a couple that started their laying career that way and then caught on with the nest boxes.
