First Egg Countdown

 Well, our first egg was actually from buttercup, not ginger. Ooops! Those chickens tricked me! lol  Ginger did lay her first egg today.. Yay!  It was the first day we got 2 eggs and it was much darker than buttercups eggs - bigger too! Here it is with buttercups eggs. Ginger is a 19 week old red sex link.



Ginger's is the darkest one.

I have an EE that is just a little over 4 months old. She has been crying for the last couple of hours. I brought her inside and called the only local friend into chickens that I have. She says it sounds like she is trying to lay her first egg and to just separate her and wait and see. Does this sound possible? I've had her for 4 months old and when I picked her up, she was already feathered so it is possible that she is older than 4 months. Could she be trying to pass her first egg? What can I do to help her? She just pooped, if she had an impacted egg, wouldn't it not allow her to poop? it was a nice solid healthy looking poop.

It sounds like she's just gearing up to lay. Chickens get REALLY loud when they first go through the experience. Right now my Faverolle girl is raising unholy cain every morning (though no egg yet, grr). She's pacing in and out of the nesting box, so I'm hoping she'll go this week. Just be patient with your girl, she's confused and will complain at the top of her lungs a lot.

And congrats to the rest of you on your beautiful first eggs! Jealous!!!

Hey coloradogal, My pullet got INSANELY loud before her first egg. I was so annoyed but I didn't connect it with egg-laying! It was so funny when I look back going out there and telling the chicken to shush very very loudly. Well she's still loud but now it's music to my ears because I know she'll lay soon

I would have guessed the production red would be first from experience and reading Breed descriptions. They can have some serious overlap with individuals between BRs and RIRs LOL.

Maranda, the blue Marans in my avatar, is turning out to be a great layer. She laid her first egg on Monday, took Tuesday and Wednesday off and then laid an egg Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They are nice eggs too.

Congrats on the eggs guys and gals

My 7 girls left are not really showing any interest in laying yet.. 17-19 weeks in varried ages and breeds.. I have 2 black sex links that are almost 19 weeks and one more gold sex link that is 18 weeks. I have a 17 week old silver laced wyandotte who had turned beet red in the wattles but still has no real comb. Has anyone had a SLW lay before 20 weeks?

Omg Butterscotch FINALLY shut up and put up! I thought I was in for several more weeks of her complaining about nothing at the top of her lungs

I think that's bedding stuck to the shell. I am stuck at work, that's my fiance's hand. When I asked him what was on the shell, his answer was "uh..." so we'll see when I get home .
