First Egg Countdown

I know I've seen it on one of the forums before and I hate to ask a question that has already been asked, but how soon until another egg? I know they usually lay about once a day or so but in the beginning how often?

It depends on the pullet. Some lay gangbusters from the start, others start then take a break for a while. There is no set schedule.

Margaret - your buffs are super close, followed by your australorp in front. Brahmas are a slow developing breed, you still have a bit of a wait with them.

I've started back to work (school bus driver). What happens if I can't collect eggs until I get home in the afternoon? My girls aren't laying yet but I'm watching, they are 18 weeks. I'm guessing they'll be ok as they don't spend their day inside the nest house. I'm worried about egg eating.

The eggs will be fine until you get home. Occasionally if one gets broken or is a soft shelled egg, it will get eaten. It doesn't mean you have egg eaters. I've gone out of town for a weekend and come home with the eggs still in the boxes.

One of my Rhode Island Red finally and at last layed an egg. With luck she has opened the flood gates.

Finally joining this thread because I can't stand the anticipation! Our BO Bettina has mega-red wattles and comb and has been squatting since last week. Can't wait!

She's likely ahead of her Wyandotte and EE sisters. Twiddling thumbs over here.

You are right chooks. It like being in the waiting room. Today I came home from work, looked in the coop and was disappointed because I didn't see any eggs. I looked in the milk crate and while someone was obviously in there for the first time ever, still no egg. But to my surprise, as I turned over the food container right underneath was another small pink perfect egg. I'm so very excited. So for now I have my answer about once every other day. I'm not sure who is laying. It's either the older barred rock or the ready to go anyday now the wyandotte. The eggs are so small it's hard to believe that it could be the wyandotte though. She's twice the size of the barred rocks.

So my barred is making some funky noises but still nothing!! But everytine I go to touch her she sticks her shoulders out and puts her butt up
