First Egg Countdown

My EE Eleanor was squawking earlier then I saw her in the nest box, a bit later she came back out of the coop but no egg. She went back out into the yard with the others for about an hour. I had to go out for a bit so I locked the girls back in the run, and when I checked the box when I got home no egg still. I walked over to a corner of the yard I don't spend much time in and almost stepped on an egg. It was off white. I'm going to assume it was Eleanor who laid it because of the way she was acting today. I was really hoping for a blue egg, I know someone who has an EE that looks just like mine and she gets blue eggs from hers so I was hoping they were the same mix of birds and mine would lay blue as well. :( The egg was a lot larger than the first eggs from either of my other 2 that are laying though but they lay medium brown eggs. The only other bird I own is a Welsummer who hasn't laid yet but I doubt it's from her. Guess I'll have to get another EE or an Ameracauna or something from a breeder to try again for a blue egg. It's a bit muddy because she laid it in the yard.

Congrats on another layer in the flock! A very perfect shape, and It's a very pretty shade of pink anyway, but I know exactly what you mean about the hope for a blue or green egg from an EE.
Still waiting on my EE, she still doesn't look close to laying.

You guys are obviously doing lighted coops right? If you just rely on the sun, when is the egg season?

My pullets are 17 weeks and I don't have power in the coop so no light...

I'm not using artificial light. My girls' coop windows face mostly west and they usually get fed around 7:15am. They haven't been laying long so not sure what their seasons will be. I also live in Arizona so it's still nice and warm here. The only thing that seems to knock them off schedule is if they get fed too late in the morning. But so far I have a BSL who's only missed one day in the past 6 weeks since her very first egg and my RIR who lays for about 8 days and then sometimes skips a day and then lays bright and early the next day.

No light in my coop in Maine, all six of my layers still give an egg a day (as of today). I don't know how long they'll keep up, it's my first year with them.

My guess is they will slow down greatly as we approach the winter solstice, and start to pick up again around Groundhog Day.

I think it also varies by breed, as those selected for lack of the seasonal egg laying gene have been bred for that purpose. A gentlemen I spoke to at TSC has Chanteclers who lay all through the winter and don't mind the several feet of snow that we always seem to have.

My two stopped for molting and the other two are just a little too young.

Just ordered a solar light and going to see if I can get the older ones restarted while beginning the pullets.

I also leave feed out 100% of the time with food and water in their coop at all times.

Doesn't appear they overeat so I figured why not.

No light here. It's the time of year for molting, so it's normal when you have an older flock for your egg count to be down. Daylight hours are short, so this will affect laying, even in young pullets.

I got 4 eggs today, and I have A LOT of chickens. Most of mine are either molting, or haven't started laying.

Got a photo of the two mystery girls this morning-
These were the "15 week old" pullets I was sent back in July-
do they look close at all?

400
hen laid this today....
