First Egg Countdown

Any surprises? You are getting one egg, that should relieve some of your impatience. But I totally get it. I am getting two a day but once I got 3 and the new layer hasn't layed since. I'm ready for 5-6 a day. I get mad when my family eats the eggs while I'm gone or at work. I want a big stash before they start going to town on the eggs.

yes I am getting 1 and it is exciting every time. I am just getting impatient for 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 egg days! I know it'll happen though. Haha, my family all had 1 bite each of our very first egg but we haven't eaten another one since. We split the eggs with our neighbors because we kind of do a Co op with them. We are up to 9 eggs so just 3 more to have a dozen and then I think we will start eating them! :)

We've been getting 3 nice brown eggs/day from 3 of our RSLs. Last Friday we got this cute little blue-green egg. It was a double yolker, too! From our only little buff banty EE. Was so excited....then nothing on Saturday. On Sunday we got two tiny little blue-green eggs. We have another EE who is ready to lay (squatting) but I did not see her in the nesting box. Only Buffy. Could she have laid both of them? The nest was emptied earlier in the day! And, so far no more little blue-green eggs! Thought maybe she was going to skip every other day. Who knows!?!

I am brand new to chickens. I have 2 black australorp mixes that are 13 weeks and 3 Easter Eggers that are 17 weeks. I put nesting boxes in the coop a week ago and put pine shavings and a couple of golf balls in them. I have a small coop so I need to open the people door to see what is going on in there, but so far I don't think any of them have checked out the boxes. Will they know what to do with the boxes once they get close to laying? Or do I need to put a chicken in there to show it to them? I can't imagine that would be any good since she would probably freak out if I tried that.

I read that some EEs can start laying as early as 17 weeks so I am getting anxious. Their combs and wattles have not started developing yet. Does that have to happen before they lay? So many questions!

from my short experience some know to use the nest boxes and some just dont. I have tried everything that has been suggested to me to get my australorp to use the box but she just wont. I now have 2 layers and the 2nd one decided to just lay her egg where my 1st one does. I think you will just have to wait and see what yours do. My easter egger has muffs I think is what they are called so she won't get wattles and her comb is just a tiny pea comb. It has reddened in the last few weeks. She has always been one that is hard to catch when I need to but she recently started squatting for me so it's easier to catch her now. I think she may lay soon. She is almost 23 weeks and looks like this (well a couple weeks ago)

Thanks for the info. 2 of my 3 EEs have muffs, too. And they all have small pea combs so I suppose it may not be as obvious as a single comb that grows and reddens before laying.

yes I don't think it's as obvious. Just a few weeks ago it really didn't even look like my girl had a comb and since it's gotten a little plumb and has gotten red, it as hard to tell it's red until she stands next to my australorp who has a very red comb. Hopefully yours starts laying before mine. I am impatiently waiting to see what color egg snowball gives us. Hoping for a green Colo but I'll take a blue too!

Your Snowball reminds me of my Marshmallow...

Three of my EEs started laying in the last week. They are 23 weeks old and have red combs and wattles(the ones I can see beyond the puffy cheeks!). I was pleasantly surprised that my first EE who laid just figured out how to use the nesting boxes. Thanks to her, one of my buff knew just where to go when she laid. Their eggs are so pretty!!!
