First Egg Countdown

Hey everyone!

Pele invited me over to join a while ago, and forgot to check out the thread. Nice to meet you all!

I am waiting on my small flock to begin laying, they are from a July 23rd hatch, and are 22 weeks old! Lots of combs growing, redding up, and waddles. Mating behaviour has begun from Duke my Columbian Wyandotte Roo, and have opened up the nest boxes and put some dummy eggs in there. No egg songs, or even squatting from what I have seen.

We're gettin there!!

All I want for Christmas is an EGG!

Happy Holidays all!

Congrats OleMissChic!!! I have to admit, I almost got teary eyed too when I got my very first egg :p. It's such a great moment, and a culmination of a journey from when you first get those tiny fluffy chicks.
Thank you Pele! The same girl has layed three days in a row now! I have a mixed flock but I have to say this little Red Star is quickly becoming my favorite. I compared her egg to a store bought one and seeing my girls deep orange yolk makes the store bought one look anemic.

Welcome Melabella! You have some pretty girls and they are much more developed looking than mine. I have two golden buffs too and one just started laying this week, an egg every day for 3 days so far! Good luck!

Thank you OleMissChick,

How old are your Golden Buffs, I bought mine from Meyer, and picked them as they are advertised as very early maturing, and also give 4/5 eggs a week. Of course, I ordered them before I knew anythhing, and now know they will likely burn out after 2 years, unlike Heritage breeds that mature later, but lay until far older. Oh well, live and learn. I love my hatchery girls! lol..

That is so awesome that yours have laid 3 days in a row.. woo hoo!

Hope I can be shoutin that out soon!

Ugh... I am so glad the days will start getting longer now... Out of 7 31 week old hens, 2 are still not laying...

My leghorn has been laying for nearly 3 months now... The last one of the five that are laying has been laying for a month...

I am waiting on an EE and a SLW. I think some hen shaming is in order.

I rescued my GBs with 3 other pullets a few weeks ago so I'm not exactly sure of their ages, just that they weren't laying yet, and none of them look as mature as yours do. In fact, the only thing that stood out to me early this week was when she seemed to squat a bit when I walked past her on Monday. Then I noticed she became a little more vocal on Wednesday. Then I noticed she was not with the flock free ranging so I went out to look for her. She was making a nest in an old moving box that had a little straw in it. She didn't seem to care that I was watching her. 30 minutes later she got up and there was a perfect, fairly large egg!
I wanted a mixed flock for variety but I noticed our local Amish community have flocks made up primarily of Barred Rocks and Golden Buffs and that spoke volumes to me since they truly live off the land and livestock. I have two of each as well as other breeds chosen for looks, broodiness and colorful eggs. I'm pulling for you to get an egg soon!

Welcome! They are really close. Maybe they are holding out for Christmas.

That is too funny.

I've still got you beat with a barnevelder that hatched 3/21 and still not laying. A bunch of freeloaders! My Cream Legbar is super close to laying though.

And my 2nd molter started back up yesterday - my EE. 8/29 was the last time she laid, so molting took her almost 4 months.

HC,

Hi! I would love to see pics of some of your Cream Legbars. I saw the chick pics, but would love to see some of your grown girls. I would LOVE to have some, is this your first go round with them? How are their personalities? Do you have a Cream Legbar Roo? I have heard they are wonderful free range birds, excellent foragers.
And blue eggs right?

Thanks for the encouragement, no eggs again this morning.. DH let them out, I was going to keep them in. I think I will go check out the borders of the property where they hang out for some nests... maybe the joke is on me!

No rooster - I'm not breeding them. I just have the one pullet that a friend of mine gave to me (she is breeding them) when my broody sat for 5 weeks (2 weeks before I gave her eggs) and nothing hatched. I did not want her sitting for another 3 weeks because her body weight was too low - so she gave me one of her cream legbar pullets.

They lay a beautiful blue egg. She is much less flighty than any of the pure Ameraucana's I've had over the years. She is very mellow. I have not free ranged that flock yet (too many predator attacks lately), so can't comment on that yet.

This was her a few weeks ago.
