so if u wash them u have to eat them sooner ?
my wife didnt know so she washed them already the first egg is only 5 days old last egg was yesterday
how long can u keep yard eggs refrigerated before u have to eat them ?

When you wash your eggs, you wash away the "bloom "that protects the egg. The bloom is a waxy coating that is on the egg when it is laid. The bloom helps keep bacteria out of the egg and helps keep moisture in. It helps keep the egg from aging. This is also why you don't want to wash eggs if you want to hatch them.

Last night, after just whining about no eggs (and buying eggs) I went outside to count heads and put everyone to bed. While performing my nightly ritual, I spied a red ranger pullet rolling a little brown egg across the bottom shelf of the old workbench where they roost. She was pushing it towards me as if to say "Look what I did mom!" I will post a pic as soon as my phone let's me.
That is sooo cute!

Very nice! How old is she? Ours are 16 weeks now, we are first time chickeners this spring. Our first egg showed up from one of our two White Leghorns today, we have 4 other girls who will lay brown eggs, and 2 roosters to watch over everyone. They are all the same age, and we didn't expect any until about late July/early August.

.

This girl may be the layer.

I hope that you do not mind me joining in here. I have 13 18 week old pullets and they all are squatting, nesting and being a lot noisier then usual. One finally disturbed one of the nest boxes sometime last night or this morning too. They all have pretty wide back sides and their combs and wattles are red and big, so I guess any day now? I am a first time chicken owner, so this is all new to me.

Here are the breeds that I have: 3 BR's, 1 WR, 1 SLW, 1 CW, 1 Dominique, 2 EE's, 2 RIR's, 1 BC and 1 BO. The only one with small combs and wattles is my one huge BO.

I also have six 7 weeks olds, so a long wait for them. (1 BA, 1 BL, 1 GLP, 1 WR, 1 Wellie and 1 SF)

They were making a racket this morning, so I went out, but no eggs yet!

Yeah, I want the different colored eggs. Eventually, I would like to get a maran too. What kinds do you have?
