First Egg Countdown

My new barred rock Frances has a weird bump on the inside of each of her middle toes. Is this normal for the breed or chickens in general?

Here's a nice pic of my egg booty to date from my new chicks. The earliest was at 14 wks and is the dark brown one from a red sex-link. The green ones are from my EE at 20 wks, the tiny creamy brown is from my golden-laced wyandotte at 19 wks, and the white ones are from my white leghorn at 20 wks. Now the only one I'm still waiting on is another GLW who I saved from a foxes jaws, no kidding. She lost some some feathers, but he dropped her when I went running to her. Maybe this trauma has delayed her egg laying??

What should I be putting in my egg boxes? I have pine shavings in the coop, and in the boxes, but they just push it all out when they are doing their egg thing. Then there is just bare wood for the eggs. Should I be putting straw in there? They are not big boxes (I have a smallish prefab coop, and my girls are pretty big... 2 EEs and a Cochin) and they do a lot of scratching and turning. Of course they are just getting started (we are on egg 2 and 4, with one EE left to start) so maybe after a while they won't be so active in the box? Any advice?

Rohern, I just got my first egg, and it was broken for the same reason. I put an old washcloth into the bottom of each and then added much more straw. So far they have been bedding the straw down, but haven't gotten to the washcloth yet. We will see if that works.

So, I got my first egg 2 days ago but nothing since. I'm assuming that this is normal since they are just ramping up?

My coop is a squawking, squatting loud house o' hormones right now! lol
