My girls are 12 weeks today and combs and faces are getting redder and redder by the day! 2 barred rocks, 4 golden buffs, 2 buff orps, 2 EE's! One of the golden buffs has been squatting for a week! And a barred rock loves her nest box. Hoping by Christmas!!
Should be any time now on your BSL.Hi all!! I have a few pullets but Coal, my BSL, is about 6 months old and I am anxiously awaiting her first egg (although I know it could be next year before she actually gives me one) I am hoping she will start soooon! lol
My other pullets are only 9 weeks old so I know I have a while before they start to lay...with my luck they will probably start laying before my BSL![]()
Most of mine start in the winter. I've only had 2 stubborn ones that made me wait 11 months for their eggs. They both (different breeds) laid for a few months, then went broody. They are wonderful mothers.I have 3 hens, 2 have been laying for weeks now. The newer, RIR, about 22 wks, nothing yet. Now, it looks like she's molting (not heavy) and the weather has gotten colder and days shorter. When the timing is like this, does the hen wait until the following Spring to start laying, or might she actually start during winter? This is Texas, so there's rarely a significant amount of days where it's bitterly cold and cloudy.
They sing before, during, after, if another bird is singing - basically whenever they feel like it. If you have a rooster, they sing too. It's their way of letting the hen know where the flock is so she can rejoin them. So, question about the "egg song" Do they start that BEFORE they lay or just afterwards? My BSL is being kinda noisy, but idk if that is only when she isn't right by my Roo's side (They are inseparable)

Love that egg plate! The eggs are nice too!
Are you sure they are 12 weeks? At 12 weeks, mine are still cheeping like chicks - nowhere near ready to lay.My girls are 12 weeks today and combs and faces are getting redder and redder by the day! 2 barred rocks, 4 golden buffs, 2 buff orps, 2 EE's! Congrats Coop6! I figured she was a week or two out yet, since you just noted her squatting a couple of days ago! The egg is nice and dark - is that a production or heritage RIR? She will be a great layer, I think!
