First Egg Countdown

I am waiting on my girls who are 12 weeks old to get older so they will lay. I could not play the waiting game this long and now have 4 laying hens . Here are some of my girls that are making me play the waiting game.

You have some very lovely girls!

Just wanted to share another JUMBO egg pic from my Red Star-Marcy. She normally lays 74 g eggs. This one was 106 g (3.8 oz). Here is a pic with some other eggs for comparison:

My pullets are 17 weeks old. The two Austrolorps (utility breed) are growing wattles & have red combs. The ISA brown is starting to go red and one of the Long Lays (Leghorn cross) is starting to grow her wattles. Hedwig is a funny looking pullet, because she never grew a comb. She just has a red stripe on her head. I may have a bit to wait, but I noticed one of the Austrolorps went into the coop on her own for a while today. Could she have been thinking about laying or am I reading too much into it? I've read that utility breeds lay earlier (which all of mine are) so I'm hoping I don't have too long to wait. I only have one nest in the run which is a converted small dog box. That should be ok for the next 3 weeks until I have more time to knock up a few nest boxes, I hope.

Well my babies are one week old! Only 20 or so weeks left! Let the countdown begin! Lol! I'm already excited to see the eggs from my mixed flock girls.

I kept three pullets from my Easter Hatch a Long chicks, two EE's and a Salmon Faverolles pullet. I know it will be quite a long time for these girls!

They are a little camera shy

Thanks Happy Chooks!

I do still have 13 HAL cockerels in the garden paddock, planning to sell them and keep one or two, every single black sex link I made turned out to be a boy... they are getting huge, it may be time to build another portable paddock.

We got our 5 chicks last March. We watched them grow, let our kids and dogs get to know them, and just took care of them for about 5 months. We had o idea when they would lay, so we weren't anxiously waiting for that first egg. Then one day, I went out to give them their morning feed and water, and I decided to look in the back of the coop, were we have the doors behind the nesting boxed, and was I surprised to find FIVE EGGS! Not sure if they layed them all that one day, because I wasn't sure if anyone checked for eggs the day before, but was thrilled to find the
eggs nonetheless! Here is a picture of our first eggs back on 9/15/13!
