First Egg Countdown

Pics
So I posted that we got our first egg on 7/1..it was beyond exciting to find. No other egg until today, which I understand is still well within the range of normal.

But...we caught someone on the nest today

since we had the big door open on the coop for lots of fresh air it was easy to spy on her. She was there for quite a while, we watched her for the better part of an hour. Who knows how long she had been there. When she hopped out of the nest we checked for an egg...nothing.

and then I discovered a soft membrane broken egg under the roost. I watched Chubby get off the nest myself so I know she didn't make a pit stop on the roost.

My question: Is it likely that Chubby laid the egg earlier on the roost and was just hanging out in the nest? Or is someone else laying from the roost and Chubby is still trying for her first? Or is it even possible to tell? I've never caught anyone in the nest before, but it's clear it's been nested in. Nobody is sleeping in there.

I'm assuming the soft egg is lack of calcium...feed stores are all closed so I've been crushing up egg shells and the girls have all been gobbling up. Good enough for a pinch? We only ate 5 eggs today and I'm wondering if it's even coming close to enough for them in crushed egg shells.

This egg stuff is soooooooooo much fun and it's so fun to read about each new egg and the lovely ladies who lay them!

Woohoo! We now have a Barred Rock laying, too. That makes two of seven girls. I found our first brown egg in the nest box today, which is a lot better than the Hamburg that keeps laying in the run. It was all cute and speckled, too.

Found dead today.

Oh, well I knew it was coming. At least she got to live a happy life for a broiler.

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear that

17 weeks is amazing for a broiler, you must have treated her very well, and gave her a lovely life.

Thanks, as she got older I had to start helping her do things like put her onto the roost every night. She was my chubby special needs chicken.

I have 2 Barred Rock and 1 Ameracauna. They are all 16 weeks old and I can't wait! I know we likely have a bit of a wait yet. We are having so much fun watching them and talking to them...yes, we talk to them. At least my husband and I do, the kids still shake their heads! After reading posts about how you'll serve the first egg...I really can't wait! Hope they don't come when we are on vacation.

I got so excited today! When I was tossing out their scratch, I saw a flash of white in the aisle of their coop. I ducked down to get a better look through the pop door and, sure enough, there was a bright white egg laying in the middle of the coop! I finished tossing out their scratch and ran around to the people door to get the first egg.

Picked it up, held it for a minute, looked at it, checked out the nest boxes...and realized I was holding one of the ceramic teaser eggs. Someone must have thought it looked lonely in its little nest box

So, still I wait.....
