First Egg Countdown

Ooo exciting! Those make me feel bad for the chicken because they're so huge. But that only lasts until I eat the double-yolker. Yum yum I love them.

I especially appreciate home-made double yolkers because it keeps me from getting stares at the grocery store. I used to pick them out of multiple egg cartons at the store, and make my own 12 pack of double-yolkers. Even the idea of people thinking I was a crazy-lady didn't deter me from spending 10 minutes in the egg section examining each egg

You know it's bad if Wal-Mart employees think you're weird.

Oh geez... all these years I could have been picking my own double yolkers? Now you tell me, sheesh Pele!!

By the way, how long after they begin to lay do you usually see a double yolker? Pearls little brown eggs are getting a tad bigger, but it's only been 9 days.

It varies, but mine started laying double yolkers in their second month of laying. It happens about twice a week now, and I think that it's from the same big-butt bird Darla. She's the one giving the camera the eye in my very first post.

tbonekel, grats on your first egg! It IS a really beautiful one! What bird layed it?

Mommymagpie, I'll tell you my secret if you promise not to notice how OCD a person would have to be to track small variations in grocery store eggs

. You have to look in the Jumbo class eggs, because as you've pointed out, the double-yolkers are huge. You look for unusually large (even for a Jumbo) egg that is slightly extended on one end. It's hard to explain, but the egg won't be the classical egg shape, but slightly off. As long as you don't mind being stared at at the grocery store, you can inspect the jumbo eggs next time. It's pretty easy once you spot your first one. That's how that lady in England was able to crack 42 double-yolkers in a row. I can't even imagine how long she collected them, or spent being in people's way in the egg aisle.

I got two double yolkers in the first 10 days...along with a couple of thin shelled eggs. She went to both extremes!

Wow, I better get out the BIG carton!

I found a little brown egg in the nest box today!

As I was sorting the shavings, I found a SECOND one

burried - probably by the second hen gettin comfortable. It was a lousy day at work and this just made it! I put fresh shavings in last night, so I know they are both from today. Based on squatting behavior, I'm guessing they are from Joy (Delaware) and Kindness (Gold Star). My Red Star has just started to squat, my other Delaware and the two Speckled Sussex aren't even thinking about it, and my EE thinks that I'm going to kill her if I touch her

They just turned 20 weeks old on Monday. And they were both in the nest where they belonged!

So glad I found this site! I too am waiting for my first eggs. I go out all the time, talk to the "ladies", check for eggs. My husband thinks I've lost my mind, but I'm hooked on chickens that's for sure! I just thought we'd get a few chickens and have some fresh eggs. HA, it's personal now! Since we didn't hatch them and I have to take the word of the local Feed store at how old they are, I'm getting (HA I'm there) so excited! Between this forum and watching my ladies this is my new full time job

I have 3 Buff Orpingtons, 2 RIR and 1 EE they said would be ready to lay in Oct. 5 White leghorns that now have bright red combs, 1 Dominecker who is HUGE fat girl that all look like they will be ready anytime. 3 RIR who are 1 (and already laying when I got them) and a GLW who gave me an egg yesterday although they said she was 2, it was a small tan colored egg, so maybe they were wrong and 1 SLW who is big and mean. Glad for the company of chicken egg watchers! Will be posting pics to "show" off my ladies today.

No eggs here yet but maybe some progress? The largest of the Welsummers has been singing the egg song (she's nearly 20 weeks). I'd heard it a couple of times but they all went silent when I peered around the corner so I wasn't sure who was singing until last night. I saw her standing halfway in a nestbox and singing like crazy. No egg, though, so I guess she was only claiming the plastic one as her own.

None of the others were in the coop at the time but they were all crowded around the pop door listening with rapt attention. I wished I'd brought the video camera.

Oh, and my 19-week super-crazy "don't even THINK about touching me" EE was being a lot more friendly yesterday and has caught up to the most mature of the EEs for pink facial coloration. I was starting to doubt that would ever happen.

I wasn't expecting eggs until September given my breed choices so an August egg would be a bonus for me but I'm still excited at every little sign.

One of my EEs is 26 weeks 2 days old - and she is just now starting to look like she might be interested in laying. I have three other EEs that started laying between 24 and 25 1/2 weeks. Good luck.

I am so jealous and envious of your egg stories. I got my 3 day old chicks on May 5 so they're only 16 weeks old. They are so big, plump, and they behave like they want to give me eggs (ie, squat when I approach) but their combs are not developed and they're young.

Plz explain the 'washing' technique I am hearing about because I thought you were only supposed to gently wipe them and never wash them?
