First Egg Countdown

I have my thought on who laid this (BR - becaue of red comb/face) but do not know. What I do know is that it was laid this morning UNDER all the hay that is in the nest boxes. WooHoo! My first egg. She was hatched about April 25th... about 22 weeks old now. So excited! It's about 3/4 the size of a large store bought egg.

We got our first egg today from Dolly, our almost 19 week old golden comet

Here's her egg on the right, next to a large store bought egg.

Mine still lay an soft shelled egg every once in a while(been laying for about two months). The chickens will peck at them and sometimes eat them if I don't get to them first. This has not lead to them eating the hard shelled eggs. In the egg laying and behaviors forum, someone said that pecking the egg is a test viability for the chickens and if it is soft they will eat it but will not eat the hard shelled eggs.

It seems that eating the eggs is caused by other things. Also, soft shelled or eggs without a shell breaking in the nest can be mistaken for egg eating. I had one break in the nest box once and it made a mess on the other eggs!

Congratulations--they will get better and you will have too many eggs soon

Finally got an egg in the nest, her husband waited patiently while she was doing her thing in the box, so i knew what was probably happening.
