First Egg Countdown

That link has lots of good information - Thank you! I definitely think the rocks will be laying first - they are by far the most mature looking. I've been worried that something isn't right with their feed ratios but I just don't know. We've been trying to let them free range as much as they want (they fly out of the run) and we supplement with kitchen scraps to offset some of the cost of feed. I hope that I am not overdoing it with kitchen scraps.

Hi

sorry that your chickens are not laying yet. Here is a link to an egg laying paper: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps029

Notice
that the egg laying cycle says that chickens will begin laying at 18 to 22 weeks, depending on Breed and Season. We are in a slow start season, it being Fall now. Also, only the Barred rocks are in the early Breed group. They will lay--it will just take a bit longer. The Barred Rocks will probably lay first.

I feel like a jerk even saying it. But something has to give - either I lower the chicken feed bill or our grocery bill. And, I've been squeezing our grocery budget as much as possible lately. So I can either eat a chicken or eat one of my kids, and I'm pretty sure that is illegal.

But. . . maybe neither will be necessary. I found the most precious little creamy pink egg this morning. I was so excited I actually teared up.

The others will start soon. Once they start laying, it takes a couple of weeks or so for each of them to get their rhythm, and there will be big changes after the first molt or one year.

I have only one of mine that just started to lay and so far it has been everyday for 4 days. I am thinking she might be a production red or something along them lines for she is a RIR of some kind. Now I would like to see her sister start to lay.

YAaaaaay congrats afj6710!

Apparently I should sell my services as chicken bodyguard/motivational speaker.

It only took 30 weeks and 2 days, but I now have 1 less freeloader as one of my barnevelders laid her first egg today!

It was a great color for a first egg and a great size too. I'll get a picture of it tomorrow.

5 down, 2 to go. My 26 wk old EE finally joined the "laying game". She had been going in the nest box for over a month. Standing there, looking under herself

. Finally started squatting 2 weeks ago. I have now gotten 3 medium green eggs, every other day! Now I just have the 2 speckled sussex (one of whom had sour crop and lost a lot of weight and has now gained most of it back (I'll cut her a couple weeks slack). My 2 RSL's are laying pretty much daily, so I have no shortage of eggs.

2down, 3 to go out of my laying age pullets. Yesterday, at 25.5 weeks, my Speckled Sussex gifted me with an egg! Now I'm waiting on 2 EEs and a Polish. I know that EEs are all over the map, but does anyone know the general range for Polish hens?
