First Egg Countdown

Australorps take longer to lay--Black Stars are laying machine hybrids. They start earlier and lay more for the first couple of years and then the laying fades faster then non-hybrids.

Mine started laying at 26 weeks, but it took another month for all of them to lay. They were hatched the first part of February, so were spring time chickens. Yours are summer to late summer chickens and will often take longer to lay. Probably in a couple of weeks. The waddles get big and red several weeks before laying. They get chatty friendlier and start squatting about two weeks before laying. Within a week of laying they will start checking out the nest box. Mine ripped the nest box up so badly I had to add a taller board to the front! Yours may just be having too much fun playing in the yard

Make sure they are getting a good layer food with enough protein. It's not a bad idea to give them some plain yogurt in the morning. I get mine from the Grocery Outlet(local discount store).

Just a note, my RIR Pullets started laying a week before the BA's--even though the RIR Pullets are 6 weeks younger, so I know your frustration.

Also, BA's will be several pounds heavier than the Black Stars. BA's develop slowly, but are a Dual purpose breed. They will not bully the others, but at some time they will re establish the pecking order and probably one of the BA's will be the top chicken.

Good luck!

9 eggs today!!!!! That means 3 more hens are laying for the first time, and we got our second blue egg in the nest

Granted, 2 of the eggs were laid while on the roost and both broke, but I am confident those girls will get it figured out. Like little gifts, everyone of them!

The whole flock at 2 days old. On the left is Kevin (BR), front-center is Dragon (EE), behind Dragon is Persephone (wellie), Artemis (BA) in the far back, and Cornelia Amelia (DOM) on the right.

While this photo is was taken when they were 13.5 weeks old, they are now 15.5 weeks old. I just don't have a more recent group photo yet.

In a few more weeks, who knows?

I wish they didn't grow up so fast. Well, at least I do now that they are giving me eggs. Before I was like "Grow up and give me eggs already!!! sheesh!"

Hehe, I know, and I kind of miss the fluffy stage, but they're a lot of fun in full feathers, too....and twice as wily!

We're not in it for the eggs so much as the experience, but now that they're getting close, my DH and I are starting to get excited about the prospect - it's kind of surreal..."These nutty mcfluffbutts are going to make eggs??? I almost don't believe it!"

Welcome to those of you joining us!

Here's a puzzler I've always thought about: Why does it seem that they grow up so fast from chicks, but seem to take forever to lay an egg?
