First Egg Countdown

How exciting for you! I can't even imagine finding an egg any more......I guess if I actually say, "I give up" I might get an egg! hahahha

I was in the house and heard one of my chicken squawking something awful. I was thinking it might finally be the "egg song" and I ran out there to look and all it was was that she couldn't find her sisters. Once she saw them she ran to them and all has been quiet since. BOOOOO! They are 21 weeks old today.

is there anything else I should be feeding them.

Oyster shell free choice on the side for strong shells. Unless you're going to clean, bake and feed their eggshells back to them.

Oh, they are on dirt. There coop floor is dirt, and I let them out during the day in the backyard to eat the grass and bugs.

And my daughter just went out to check on eggs, and found one in the nest. It is the small one next to the store bought egg.
Congrats!

We got our first egg today, it is really small. Here is a not so great picture of it in the nest box. Not sure which one layed it. I think it is my barred rock but not sure. My daughter won the guess on which day we would get our first egg. She picked tomorrow.

I don't know why I do this to myself, but I'm checking the nest boxes for pullet eggs already. I know I still have a little wait. My April 9th chicks from MPC are 17 weeks old on Monday. They'll be 20 weeks on the 27th of this month. I have 2 golden comets/RSLs. 1 has red face and comb, the other's is still pale so it'll be a while yet.

However, my welsummer has had a red face and comb since the same time as the other RSL. I heard the wellies are later to lay, but she seems to be maturing faster than my other RSL. I wonder if she will still lay around 30 weeks? This welsummer hen is SO CALM. She is a joy to have around. 2 of my EE hens are flightier than my brown leghorns were at ths age. the EE roo is pretty sweet, and very funny to watch.

I am also in love with the coloring on my DL Barnevelder. She is a little skittish and shy, and has a limp. I think she was injured during shipping, and has always had a bit of a limp, and walks like a model crossing one leg in front of the other when she walks. With her "fancy dress" on, it looks like she's walking the cat walk. :) she runs well, and she doesn't get picked on, so I hope she does ok as she gets older.

Anyway, I'm checking my nest boxes way earlier than I should be for pullet eggs.

Congrats! It does look like my BR eggs.

My wellies (breeder quality) start laying around 24 weeks. The one that is going to drive you bonkers is the Barnevelder. They are soooooo slow to lay, my last group of pullets didn't start laying until 34 weeks. (that was the first pullet, others took longer than that)

WOOHOO!! We just got our first egg!

Not sure who it came from - we have 5 black stars who will be 17 weeks old on Sunday and 4 golden comets who are about 16 weeks old now. My hubby sent me a text with a photo of it, so he was the lucky egg finder. I'm so jealous that he got to find it and not me!

We got our second egg in two days today. I was correct in thinking it was my BR as I caught her in the nest box right before she layed it. My mixed flock were hatched about April 1 which makes them about 18 weeks. I thought my leghorn or my red or black sex link would lay first.

BR's are fantastic. I have a hatchery BR that is 3 1/2 years old and still gives me 6 jumbo sized eggs a week.

One oddly shaped mint green egg here today. My BR were all squatting for me today so I'm really expecting some brown eggs any day now. I switched them back to Purina today after going through a bag of Nutrena. Who knows, maybe that will make a difference.

We went on a trip this week and my mom was taking care of our chickens, and of course, one of our chickens laid our first egg. It was in one of the nesting boxes. On the right is a large store bought egg and on the left is our first egg. We're pretty excited even though we didn't find it ourselves. Our chickens are 22 weeks old. I think it was our Barred Rock named Lucy.
