So I took a better photo of our first egg... it is so adorable!! I love the color. The shell is nice and hard, too. So many things I've read talk about the first eggs being soft or not having shells that I was surprised by how sturdy it seems.

I'm pretty sure that it was our golden comet that laid this egg. She was in the nesting box yesterday morning when I left for work and by the time my husband got home from work a few hours later, the egg was there. Go figure that our first egg is from one of our younger chickens (about 16 weeks old to the day).

Wow you guys! I go out of town a couple of days and you have 4 pages of pretty chickens for me to be jealous over!

Grats on all those gorgeous new eggs! Or gorgeous second eggs lol.

All of this makes me itchy for new peeps to start a countdown for. Hrm... wonder if my fiance could be kept distracted from the bathroom closet for a few weeks while I brood some peeps....

OMG! OMG!! OMG!!! Two of my pullets squatted for me today!!! They are 21 1/2 weeks old. I saw another one checking out the nesting boxes last night!!! OMG! And, don't you know......I am going out of town Sun - Wed and I knooooooooooow my DH will be finding the first eggs! OMG! It's like I'm going to lay the silly eggs myself I'm so excited. It's been a long time coming! I will be following my girls around until I leave on my trip. The good thing is is that I'm going to get two of my grandsons and they will have so much fun getting their own eggs in the morning! Will post more whenever it happens!

Flowerbh.... I don't know how you can be so subdued at such an exciting time :D
Seriously it was the happiest time for me as an adult since maybe the birth of my human babies... I don't know what it is about those eggs! And it's been maybe 3 weeks now since they started laying, and I jump out of the car every day when I get home from work to check the nesting boxes!

Well I am building the nesting boxes for my 19 week old hens tomorrow so they can no longer hold that over my head as an excuse for not laying...

Now let me ask, what do you all use as litter in the nest boxes? I have sand in my run, pine shavings in my coop, was thinking some sort of grass / straw material for the nesting boxes...
