First Egg Countdown!!

Barred Rock Girls,

I think it can take a full month, but definitely a few weeks for them all to get "regular".

I have always loved that first month of sporadic eggs, since that is when they are most likely to mess up and lay a very tiny one, or one without a yolk, or a huge double yolker.

Smccuen,

I could picture it perfectly! Now I feel better about those little bantam roosters crowing already. I actually have had chickens for a few years now, and grew up with them...but I don't seem to remember anything. I am very much hoping that the bantam roosters get better at their crows. I know that they do tend to improve over time, but I can't remember if they are at their mature crow a month after they start, or three months....or. ....?

Also, I can't wait to see how long it takes your girls to lay inside the nest boxes! Also, sorry you are having to redo the nest box door. :p

Chicken fever,

That chicken looks so lovely red in the face! And the coop on your avatar is super pretty!

Thanks Alaskan our coop is an old dog house...,

Ok so I got one egg at 11 this morning and another at 4 pm so I know 2/14 hens are laying .... They are all the same age ? Shouldn't they all be laying then? When will the others start?

I have 6 Red Sex-Links that are 14 weeks old. For the last few days they have been very vocal. 3 of them have dark red crowns, waddles and faces. Today I noticed 2 of them squatting when we try to pat them. They are very interested in the nest boxes too!! All good signs from what I am reading!!!

yep - should be any day now

Yay. Now two of my three hens are laying. And - odd thing - they are all busy digging pits in the sand of the run. They seem a little stir-crazy. I'm wondering if this just comes with beginning to lay eggs.

Congrats on the eggs!!! :) They look wonderful! I cant wait for mine. My grandkids run out looking every morning. Its really funny how excited they are knowing the time is getting closer.

One of my 22 week old dominiques squatted for me today. So I am officially in countdown mode.

Funny thing is she was supposed to be a rooster. I guess now I have to give up the idea of hearing that nostalgic crowing.

thanks, dawnpel - mine are laying sometime after 10 am. Guess I'll be able to narrow it down some come the weekend - now it's while I'm at work a mile away.
