Last fall a broody hatched out 4 chicks. The 2 that survived a dog attack turned out to be pullets. Today one layed her first egg! It's the olive one, shown next to mamma's for comparison.
I see this as a huge step to a self-sufficient flock, a personal goal. A hatchery hen layed an egg in our coop, another hen hatched it out, that pullet grew up and started laying...Wow! I'm just really tickled. Plus I didn't have an olive egger yet.
