We got our first egg from one of our girls yesterday! I was not expecting anything for another few weeks so I was beyond excited!! They are about 18 weeks old so just wanted to run this by you guys since it seems soon to me but then again I'm totally new to this! I thought they started at 5-6 months. Also she laid it in the middle of a walkway not anywhere near their coop. They get to roam most of the day and then they stay in their coop at night. Is this normal for her to do until she gets the hang of things? One more thing, can I eat this first egg? It is a prefect beautiful little egg that I'm looking forward to enjoying! Just want to make sure I can eat it before I crack it open because it's so cute! Thanks!

Congrats! One of my RIR's has had a red comb and waddles for several weeks now but no egg. My RSL is the only hen laying. Her first eggs were so small and cute! It took about three of those eggs to equal one large lol. They're still only about medium size but she is the smallest of all my hens. I wasn't expecting any for several weeks either! I have three RIR's, one RSL, two Austrolorps, three Barred Rocks and a New Hampshire Red. All different ages but my RIR's are the oldest. We don't have our run built yet because of all the wet weather we've had so they free range during the day and go up in the coop at night. I'm thinking I might not build a run after all and just let them free range during the day. They can go in the coop if they need to and they put themselves up at night. I just shut them up tight and turn out the light. The only bad thing about it is our bloodhound can't free range while the chickens are. Not that she cares, because after all, she's a lazy hound.
