First egg gone bad? [Graphic Pics]

Did you flush out her cloaca with cool water, with a turkey baster? I believe that is a very important step, to assure all the shell is removed.

This is just me asking, but as to date, have you gotten any eggs from any members of your flock that are her age?

She doesn't look ready to lay, IMO. She doesn't look like she's even thinking of it yet.

I have a RIR that is a smidge over 5 months and is only just beginning to look a little redder in the comb and wattles, but still no eggs from her....

I just don't see anything about her that says she is ready to lay. Her comb and wattles are not red. They are larger than I'd suspect for a 4 month old pullet, but...

I have a feeling she has white diarrhea instead of egg contents coming out. Plus, if there is no blood coming from the vagina, I am doubtful an egg broke inside of her.

I think she will be fine as she does not have the "far-off" look that hens have when an egg has broken in them. I would continue treating the wounds around the outside, but please don't stick anything inside of her to remove something. You can do much more damage than is realized.

I'm not saying the cloaca will bleed, I'm saying blood will come from the vagina. When the egg breaks, it flattens and the sharp edges of the shell act like razor blades on the muscular vagina. Being muscular and vascular, the hen eventually bleeds out, which may be happening but this hen just does not have the look of a hen that is bleeding out "dazed" look. In the photo, she seems perfectly alert.

mangus, is there any way to get a view of the cloaca (vent)? If it's still yellow, shrunken and not producing discharge, then it is extremely doubtful that she is laying.

I think it's just that she got stuck in a corner somewhere, someone decided it'd be fun to peck on her and the others just decided to join in.
