I am so happy! I hope this is a sign my girls are moving on from living in freeloader mode. I have no idea whose egg it is but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually!

Middle of winter, a cold spell, short days and long nights. It just goes to show you never really know when you will get that first egg. It is a good feeling.

If you really want to know which one is laying, check the vents. The one laying should have a soft, moist, pink vent. The others should be tight and dry. Once you see the difference it's pretty obvious. The easiest way to catch them is probably off of the roost at night though you may have lap chickens. The first I'd check is the one with the brightest red comb, that's a likely candidate.

Thank you! I think I'm going to have to do that. I have 5 girls. 1 I have had for about a year and she was laying before winter. Two are RIRs my husband got at auction a couple months ago when they were both molting, so I'm guessing they're 12-18 months?? The last two are red junglefowl that are 7-8 months and haven't laid. I have noticed though that their combs have been getting redder the last few weeks.
