Not necessarily. Some hens will do multiple clutches and I've heard silkies are notorious for doing just that
I agree with this, I’ve had a hen, though not a silkie, go broody half a dozen times in a year and hatch two clutches of chicks that year. It really depends on the particular bird along with breed characteristics.
 
You should buy an incubator for your son and show him what has to happen for an egg to hatch :D
I agree with this post. I got a basic incubator from amazon and i'll post a video of a an egg I candled a couple days ago. Candling means holding a light under the egg to see the chick inside. This one moves around the most.
