We're so eggcited! Found our first egg yesterday - a small light tan egg!

As soon as i get the battery charged on my camera, i will post pictures under the First Egg thread.

I have my suspicions on who is the hen responsible, but i want your opinions, please. I think it is one of my 2 buff orps - would it be the one who has the larger and more developed comb and wattles and earlobes who is NOT doing the egg squat, or is it the buff orp of the same age who is less "mature" in the face but who DOES do the egg squat every time i pass her by? They are 19 weeks old.

I have no idea, but I'm hoping someone thinks they might know, because I have the same question!!

We have 2 EE's, 2 RSL's, and a SLW. The Wyandotte has the most pronounced comb and wattles, but one of the RSL's is the only one that squats. They are almost 20 weeks old and we got three eggs yesterday (the first we've found) but no idea who is producing what. We had grand visions of tracking which bird produced which eggs, so we could see how each breed compares, but I'm clueless as to how we can determine who laid what!

We got our first egg yesterday. We thought it was from one of the black australorps since their wattles and combs are more pronounced and one of them was squatting, but the egg came from our buff orpington. She's a few days shy of 20 weeks. Her wattles and comb are small and less developed, but she has been singing the egg song for at least 4 weeks and would sometimes squat if I touched her. We saw her in the nest this afternoon and soon after, she laid her second egg.

Do either of the orps sing? I'd go for the one displaying more egg laying rituals.

I have just answered my own question...

It just started to downpour, so i ran outside to put the 11-week-olds into the coop, and i caught her in the act! It is the buff orpington, Snowflake, who has been doing the egg squat for the last 2 weeks! I would have though that it would be the one with the really developed comb and wattles, but not so!

She has been an egg machine since starting to lay. She laid her first on Saturday, took Sunday off, and she has laid an every day since then!

Now, if i could only get her to lay in the nexting boxes.... She has managed to squeeze her big, poofy butt through the small door into the silkie's area and has made a nest in there on the floor, and she was none-too-pleased when I tossed my youngsters in there with her.
