I am very excited to get my first egg today. It was from a 4 mo. Old buff Orpington I was surprised at how small the egg is. My question is.....are the eggs smaller when they first start laying? Thanks so,much!

Definitely smaller when they start. They are called Pullet eggs. One chicken owner called them 'pullet bullet'. LOL.

My pullet's first egg weighed 1.26oz. Now after about a month of laying she is up to about 1.6 oz. (going from size pee wee to size small to size medium). She laid an exceptionally large egg. 1.9 oz that was a double yolked egg.

It takes about 8 weeks before they will reach full size...maybe even 12.

Here is a link to a page I have that includes a chart telling the USDA size designation based upon egg weight.

Congratulations on your first egg.
