THANKS!! This is great! We soaked her in a warm Epson salt bath for 20 min., which she was very calm for. (I wonder if it actually felt better. Maybe she liked it.) Then we applied some (pain-reliever free/no aspirin) Prep H and Neosporin. With that and a little water-based lubricant, I was able to replace the protrusion back and hold it there for a bit. It came back out when she next pooed, but much less red. She's away from the other birds for now. Going to repeat twice a day and hopefully it gets better. Poor girl.

Honestly, she's my very favorite chicken. (That's her a bit younger in my profile pic.) I really hope she starts feeling better soon.

This gives good tips, mainly separate from the flock & get her out of lay for now so she can heal. This author gets out there when she blames winter lighting for prolapse. Only ever had prolapse once in 22 years & that was a new layer in August with no lighting involved. To each his own, but spreading half truths like this is not helpful.

Thanks! She's also a first time layer. And the egg that was attached that I had to get out in the bath was sideways Poor girl.

She's still separated from the flock. For the past two days we've soaked her in epsom salt (for about 20 min.) and applied Prep H/ Neosporin 2X day. I've re-inserted the prolapsed part, but it keeps popping back out once she poops. But she is pooping. And she's in generally good spirits. (Amazing spirits considering. Gosh she's a sweet girl.) She's drinking water and eating. Straining still though.

Did you chicken make it with treatment?

So I was able to get the swelling down -- but there was weird white and black scabbiness still that seemed to prevent her from healing. We took her to the vet, and they cut that off and then put in a couple sutures. She's doing great so far! Vet thinks everything looks really good.
