First egg today!!! but it has a hole in it.

My hens went for the first egg they caught their eye on, despite the fake eggs. They cracked it open and split the yolk amongst themselves like vultures lol. I cleaned it quick. I was really concerned too at first but they haven't tried it again. I just am sure to check for eggs as often as possible. I guess maybe they don't remember that they can eat the eggs. Bird brains... lol

Thank you everybody for your feedback. Here is an update.

Yesterday we got a beautiful unblemished egg from another chicken in an adjacent nest box (one without the fake eggs) We know it is a different chicken because it is a very light brown. Today we got another punctured egg in the same box as previously with this chicken and the same dark brown. Again the hole was on the underside of the egg and looks uneaten.

Does anyone have any experience with this as far as when it will stop, or if it will stop on its own? Should I remove the fake eggs?

Thanks!

You could set a camera up to see what is happens like if it that they are stepping or pecking. If it's a pecking issue they need more to pack at. Also if more than one is laying I would get rid of fake ones

I don't like the way this is trending. You had the one with the thin shell but thick membrane Tuesday, the smear with no shell Wednesday, and the one today, Friday. I can't tell how thick the shell is and can't see a membrane. Looks like a chunk of the shell is missing. The egg in the other nest was fine. The smear could have been a shell-less egg if she is still working n getting her shell gland to work right.

To me this looks more like a scratch than anything else. It doesn't look like a peck or a claw poking a hole in it when they are walking on the eggs. It does not look eaten. I'm guessing the three fake eggs are still all in this one nest.

I'm at a loss. Once can be an accident, but this is getting a bit beyond coincidence. It doesn't look like anything I recognize. I'd try spreading those three fake eggs back into those three nests to see if they wind up together again. I don't know if that is important or not.

Update:

I think all is fine now. I took the fake eggs out on Christmas eve and yesterday we found two beautiful intact eggs one from each bird laying now. What a wonderful Christmas gift! Today we had another intact dark one! Hopefully it stays this way.

Thanks for everyone's help!
