Hi
We have been waiting patiently for our hens to lay and got our first egg today however the shell is extremely soft and started to split open when picked up. The hens have been on organic layer pellets since May so what is wrong?
Should we also be giving them additional oyster shell calcium. We do give them greens everyday and they get out to free range most days in addition to us giving them worms etc. Are we giving them too much greens? Also they discovered the joy of tomatoes and over the last couple of weeks have been eating quite a few of those. Can anyone help?

It's normal to get some soft shelled eggs. My BR gave me 2 in a row, then a hard shelled egg, followed by a double yolker. I've read here that it takes their bodies time to adjust to egg laying.

But yes, give them oyster shell too.

Nothing is wrong- relax!

It takes most hens several tries to make a perfect egg. What you are seeing is a pullet egg or 'fart egg'. Imperfect, but encouraging!
