First Egg!

One of my ducks laid her first egg Tuesday and the other this morning. Both her eggs were clean as a whistle, she comes inside at night and lays her eggs around 6am right before I let her out for the day. I put fresh chips daily for them. I know that is a hassle but it has kept my eggs clean so far.

I use hot water because hot water helps prevent the egg from absorbing bacteria, the warmth makes the membrane swell so it pushes out any bacteria. Cold water makes the membrane contract which pulls in bacteria.

I have no experience with those, but I'm not a proponent of cleaning eggs using any method. That's the biggest reason I do everything possible to keep ours clean. Cleaning removes the cuticle, which makes the embryo much more susceptible to bacteria that can enter the shell far more easily once the protection of the cuticle is removed.

I'm not a fan of cleaning an egg either but I'm not going to break a duck egg open and possibly have dirt/poop fall off. I'd rather take my chances with a wipe that is supposed to be good for cleaning eggs rather than warm or cold tap water.

Probably no harm in cleaning if you're eating them. I was coming from a hatching perspective, so apologies if I misunderstood.

No apologies necessary ma'am! You've been a huge help for me at least and I'm sure others as well :')

Thank you so much! Sometimes I forget that not everyone collects their duck eggs for hatching!
