Hey Everyone. Looking for a little help tonight. My leghorn laid her first egg tonight. I found yolk and shell laying on the ground. I scooped it up and shortly after I found another one laying in the run. Is this normal for first egg?

Yes. It could take her a little time to get it right. Make sure she has plenty of oyster shell free choice and you might want to amp up her protein for a week or so. Boiled eggs crushed up are a good choice so are many other options. Takes a lot of protein and calcium to make an egg.

Congrats on the first egg.
I bet if you left the crushed egg on the ground they would have cleaned it up for you in no time.

Thanks for the pointers! I have oyster shell and a layer feed available for them. We were a little worried about this hen. She never really grew with others and she isn't a Bantam, but very petite. Thanks again guys

Our rescued Golden Laced Wyandotte has laid her first two eggs over the past three days, we were told she was 19 weeks when we got her and she is now 24 weeks so I guess she was right on time. She has laid two pretty small eggs but she has laid both in the coop nesting box and both had good strong shells! We are just very excited she has acclimated herself to our pre-established flock of three and is now a healthy, happy laying hen...YAY Hilda!!!
