First egg!

2nd egg!! We built her a nesting box with curtains and I put a blanket in there. She went in this morning for about 15 mins and voila! 9902544F-8088-4A47-BABC-767623F437BE.jpeg

I've seen most first layers go hormone nuts.jumping on things, digging under .sometimes pecking they're friends.after they lay the egg, they calm down.sometimes a couple days.they like the first couple eggs, laying on it for a long time.
The following eggs, they are less serious and are nice to the other hens around them again.
Some get grouchy every time they start re- laying after a break.i have one barred rock that is nervous everyday, until she lays mid morning.she is "pecky" and hyper, frequently.sometimes I give her a half hour time out in kennel.shes much better afterwArds. She gets yelled at so much, she ducks down when I say " don't you touch her!"
She knows, but can't control herself.i like her.she just hormonally challenged .

My 18 week mixed mix laid her first today! She has been screeching at us non stop for 3 weeks and squats if you just look at her. Today she was separated for attacking the other silkie hen we have in the coop with her but we put her back and when I went to check on her there it was! She laid it right in the temp nesting box I put out for her made up of a cardboard box on its side. I wasn’t here when she was attacking or separated but I bet that egg was there and she was protecting it. Tell me if you think I’m right!

ETA: another question, what is with all the scratched up cardboard in the box? Is that part of the process?

Nice, always a good feeling getting that first little treasure chest. I don't feel she was guarding her egg, could just be a size difference which caused the commotion. Some people have success mixing in Silkies with regular chickens and a lot don't which causes them to have breed only pens. :clap

Congrats on your first egg. I hope you read this before breakfast lol. We got our first egg thanksgiving day. I think your first egg is a trophy & a memory.

Here is what to do. Poke a small picture hanging nail in 1 end without cracking the egg.

Then take a toothpick and plunge it in and out until all the egg comes out.

Now you have an empty shell & memory of your first egg.

In my case our first egg just happened to be from a whiting true green & matches our new sage green china cabinet.
We get lots and lots of eggs now but will always remember the first one. View attachment 1991771 View attachment 1991772 View attachment 1991774

Just an idea for you. You waited with anticipation for your first egg so perhaps you will like this idea. Anyhow congrats & may your girls lay many more.
Thank you! I'm still excitedly waiting for my first egg. A picture of that first egg is great but it doesn't seem enough for something so memorable as my first chickens & first egg. I'm going to try it if I ever get an egg. I'm talking to you Mildred & Louise.

I was surprised yesterday to find a white egg...first one from my 3.5 month old White Leghorn. I've had 3 in 3 days so not sure if others are laying or just the one. That's the earliest I've ever had them lay. :) UPDATE: 2 must be laying. There were two in the nests today. :) UPDATE: now 6 eggs. The girls don't like someone else laying when they're not I guess. :)
