FIRST EGG

Happy Day! Congratulations on your first egg! I have 10 RIR pullets that are 16 weeks old and I think I might be like a kid on Christmas morning when I discover my first one. For those who have blown them out, are you able to re-fill it with another substance (like via syringe or something)? If so, what do you use? If not, is there anything you can do to make the shell less fragile?
@ShotgunDog I have 9 RIR pullets and was where you are about a year ago. I still have the picture of my girls first egg. Mine didn't start laying till about 26 weeks. I got lots of big double yolkers and a few small ones too starting out. Also the occasional oops eggs on the poop tray overnight. Fast forward a year later and I get anywhere from 7 to 9 eggs a day. But finding this first one was just like you said - like Christmas morning!

One of our girls laid her first egg! I am a first time chicken owner so I am very very excited!! But I also have some questions!

Is it normal that it is so small?

Is there anything special you have to do to first (or any) eggs?

I have 11 pullets, do I need to wait until they’re all laying before I change their feed?
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate all the helpful information! I probably will collect the shells also because when I decided to get chickens, I had no idea how invested I was going to be in every little thing they do 😂 I just love them so much!
enjoy eating your first egg

More of our girls have started laying now, yay!!! But we’ve had 2 eggs like this 😔 I’m wondering if this is normal for pullets when they first start laying? If it is not, what can I do to help??

Also, is this one egg, or 2?

I'm not too experienced, but I'm pretty sure it's normal for deformed eggs when pullets first start laying. My quail could start laying now or in the next few weeks, and I'm super excited to see what they make.

That is awesome! Mine are 18 weeks old yesterday and I am seeing a few exhibit the "laying soon" behaviors. I also have a few which I think will be chicks forever. But ... exciting times!
